Talking about … Writing your family history--what are the options?

Talking about … Writing your family history--what are the options?
Starts: 25 Jan 2023 at 10:00 AM
Ends: 25 Jan 2023 at 12:00 PM
Notes: THIS EVENT WILL BE HELD ONLINE. Speaker: Nancy Edwards

The best way to preserve your family history is to write about it.

You could write a story for our journal; upload a document to Ancestry; a page on a website such as the Virtual War Memorial, My Primitive Methodists; an entry on Convict Records, Wikipedia and Wikitree; a media output (blog, podcast and YouTube); or a play for your grandchildren to act out.

Talking abouts ... are a chance to engage with like-minded others through questions, answers, and discussion. Do you want to learn more about one of these avenues? Have you already used them? Can you suggest another avenue? Come along and share your experiences. This broad discussion of the avenues open to us and your interests may lead to further Education events.

Please note. A "Talking About" session is a discussion group where everyone is expected to contribute through sharing their knowledge and experience, through asking questions and/or giving opinions and answers. It is not a presentation. It is open to all levels of experience, no question is too silly to ask.

Note: This event is held in QLD time, AEST: no daylight saving. (GMT+10)

In addition, the agenda for each meeting identifies a topic of importance for further discussion.

Members are encouraged to email the President president@qfhs.org.au, Treasurer treasurer@qfhs.org.auand Secretary secretary@qfhs.org.auwith questions generated by their reports so informative responses may be provided at the General Meeting.

Starts: 22 Mar 2023 at 10:00 AM
Ends: 22 Mar 2023 at 12:00 PM
Notes: THIS EVENT WILL BE HELD ONLINE

Presenter: Nancy Edwards

Perhaps your ancestors lived near a royal address. If so, the local newspapers were quite different from other newspapers around the country.

Perhaps an ancestor signed a petition to the king. Is there a family rumour of a long lost royal ancestor and/or inheritance?

Where were your ancestors at the time of previous coronations?

Can you share any sources that have been useful to you? Nancy Edwards will host this session (NOT by royal warrant of appointment).

Please note. A "Talking About" session is a discussion group where everyone is expected to contribute through sharing their knowledge and experience, through asking questions and/or giving opinions and answers. It is not a presentation. It is open to all levels of experience, no question is too silly to ask.

Ends: 28 Mar 2023 at 9:00 PM
Notes: THIS EVENT WILL BE HELD ONLINE AND IN PERSON AT THE QFHS FAMILY HISTORY RESEARCH CENTRE i.e. A HYBRID MEETING.

Our book club is designed for family historians. Share your favourite reads in a relaxed setting. There's no requirement to read a particular book. High brow, low brow - we don't care as long as we're enjoying good writing and discovering something along the way.

In this Book Club, our theme is Genealogy Mysteries.

Louise Penny and her Three Pines series is currently very popular on Amazon Prime. What genealogy mysteries do you enjoy reading and why? What can we learn from fiction when writing nonfiction? What makes a great character?

Maybe you have heard of Nathan Dylan Goodwin. Did you know we have some of his books in our lending library at the Family History Research Centre at Chermside? Other suggested authors include Wendy Percival, Steve Robinson, M K Jones, Susan Finlay, John Nixon, and Geraldine Wall.

NEWSFLASH

Wendy Percival author of the Esme Quentin series joins us from the UK for our very first Book Club event. Her most recent novel is Blood Tied. This work covers a wide range of topics of interest to a family historian: adoption, inheritance and the trickly notion of family.

Join us to hear Wendy's story of creating a world and the challenges faced by writers of mystery.

The Book Club events are Members Only events. Non-members are encouraged to have a look at all of the activities of the society. In particular, check out the Members Lounge webpage where all members only events are listed. If you feel keen to attend these activities, please join us.

James McMaster was born in Liverpool and now lives in Marlow-on-Thames, near Heathrow Airport. His family comes from Antrim and both parents were born in Belfast.

The gravestone was found by a Northern Ireland FHS member.

James will tell the story of how the discovery of the obelisk in the Belfast City Cemetery started a trail that then led him “across the water” (as they say in Belfast) to England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and the USA.

Was your soldier ancestor farewelled or welcomed home at a Town Hall meeting? Were your ancestors active in town affairs, attending political meetings or monthly meetings at a Town Hall?

Schools of Arts provided public lectures and reading material for those of our ancestors who sought self-improvement. Perhaps your family helped raise funds for or construct a community hall.

Did you attend balls, old-time dances or eisteddfods yourself?

Come along and share your stories. Nancy Edwards will be ""Master of Ceremonies"".

Please note. A ""Talking About"" session is a discussion group where everyone is expected to contribute through sharing their knowledge and experience, through asking questions and/or giving opinions and answers. It is not a presentation. It is open to all levels of experience, no question is too silly to ask.

Got a question? A suggestion? Email Education team education@qfhs.org.au.

Note: This event is held in QLD time, AEST: no daylight saving. (GMT+10)

Please register your planned attendance on Eventbrite, when the link becomes available, whether you are planning to attend in person or online.

Ends: 27 Apr 2023 at 11:30 AM
Notes: THIS EVENT WILL BE HELD ONLINE AND IN PERSON AT THE QFHS FAMILY HISTORY RESEARCH CENTRE i.e. A HYBRID MEETING.

Using case studies from QFHS Research team experience and other resources, we help you chart your way through tricky conundrums encountered in your family history research.

Each family historian faces their own unique problems, but there are some common tools that we can all employ to help unravel the puzzles or break through the brickwalls we face in our journey.

From defining the research question to mind mapping all possible resources that could help us in our quest, we study examples, share issues and learn strategies for dealing with those thorny never-ending dilemmas from the known unknowns (facts we know we don’t know) to the unknown unknowns (even trickier – facts we don’t know that we don’t know!).

Learn how to use historic maps to locate a property, to identify the right land files, and to locate those files at the Queensland State Archives.

Find out how to interpret the contents of the files when you see them.

Discover the difference between a pastoral run and a grazing farm, and between a resumption and a selection. Learn where to find the ‘rules’ that governed who got what land and under what conditions.

This talk will help you access a source rich in historic documentation for a place, a family, and a community.

Attend online and/or view on catchup for a month after the meeting (when speakers have given consent). Limited places are available for each session, so bookings on Eventbrite are essential.

GUEST SPEAKER: GREG HALLAM, HISTORIAN WITH QUEENSLAND RAIL

Greg Hallam has been with QR/Queensland Rail since 2000, and has been the Historian for the organisation for (nearly) all of the past 21 years.  Greg is a third generation member of the Queensland Railways, with a grandfather commencing as a locomotive cleaner in Bundaberg in 1911.  Greg is a post-graduate of the University of Queensland, and had been active professionally in the community history and cultural heritage field for nearly 30 years.  Greg has some published work behind himself, has travelled Queensland extensively in times past documenting the story of the railways and their connection to the State, and has also been fortunate to have travelled from Brisbane to Mareeba, Longreach and Charleville behind steam locomotives for various anniversary events sponsored by Queensland Rail (and even had his ‘office’ set up for a while in the Guards Van of a steam train between Emerald and Longreach, and to Mareeba…)

2023 will be 70 years since the first air conditioned trains entered service on the Queensland Railways.  The Inlander commencing in 1953, and the venerable Sunlander in June 1953 (until its being withdrawn in 2014).  Other air conditioned trains also entered service the following year in 1954, the Midlander and Westlander, however, the route north and going for the sunshine of north Queensland really began in the mid 1930s.  How Queensland Railways promoted the journey north for the tourists, how the Sunshine Express for twenty years was a tourism experience in itself and how the ‘Lander trains changed so much of train travel in country Queensland in the 1950s will be the topic for our talk.

Presenting... times vary between 1pm and 7.30pm  Please check the calendar carefully. You are welcome to attend as a visitor.

Note: This event is held in QLD time, AEST: no daylight saving. (GMT+10)

Ends: 23 May 2023 at 11:30 AM
Notes: THIS EVENT WILL BE HELD ONLINE AND IN PERSON AT THE QFHS FAMILY HISTORY RESEARCH CENTRE i.e. A HYBRID MEETING.

Our book club is designed for family historians. Share your favourite reads in a relaxed setting. There's no requirement to read a particular book. High brow, low brow - we don't care as long as we're enjoying good writing and discovering something along the way.

This book club focuses on Family Histories I have read/loved/admired. So this month we're reading a book nominated for the QFHS Family History Award.

Think about what you liked about all aspects of the publication. Do you judge a book by its cover? What did you wish had been there that wasn’t? What worked and what didn’t?

Don’t forget we have a great lending library full of all the family histories nominated for our family history award. Award winners are listed at https://www.qfhs.org.au/about-us/awards/book-award-winners.

Come into our Family History Research Centre at Chermside and find one today.

Searching for maps. Searching on maps. Searching when maps.

Do you "get" maps or do you turn the refidex (street directory) around as you navigate? A relevant map can help us track our ancestors, but there are pitfalls. Is there more than one location with the same name, or no locations with that name?

Kerry Raymond guides this session. We will share apps and websites that have been useful in our research. Maybe we will learn a new skill, or just to read the legend. Perhaps someone will be there who has the key to your family history treasure.

Please note. Queensland Globe--So many possibilities.

Queensland Globe is an interactive mapping website providing access to the spatial information held by the Queensland Government. It is a powerful tool with an extensive array of information that can be overlaid on the maps, but it can be overwhelming for the beginner.

This hands-on session will be aimed at beginners including: navigating around the Globe, searching for locations by a range of methods, obtaining information about a particular place, and working with the hundreds of built-in data layers (some of which will be included in the presentation).

Some of the limitations of the Qld Globe will also be discussed. Note that Queensland Globe primarily deals with current information rather than historical information.

Read more about Queensland Globe.

Please note: As this is a hands-on computer-based session, participants should be confident with basic computer skills, using keyboard and mouse, copying and pasting.

Learn@QFHS - The servant problem …
Starts: 9 Jun 2023 at 10:00 AM
Ends: 9 Jun 2023 at 11:30 AM
Notes: THIS EVENT WILL BE HELD ONLINE.

Speaker: Chris Schuetz

Topic: The servant problem or my great great grandmother was a general.

Domestic service in Australia from both the servant and employer point of view.

Your ancestors probably worked as servants at some time, only you don't know about it yet.

The 'domestic service problem' was a subject of public debate from the 1880s through to the 1940s in Australia. Chris will examine how servants in Australia would not accept the same class system that prevailed in Great Britain. He will discuss the problems for employers in getting good help, and the problems for the employees in trying to obtain better employment conditions.

In early Australia male and female servants were often convicts, and later on servants were indentured. As society evolved the master and mistress were looking for general servants, cooks, laundresses, and nursery maids. Some worked and lived in grand houses, some in schools, some in quite modest homes, even their own parents' home, and some came in as day help. Chris will help us understand what resources are available to identify these ancestors.

Attend online and/or view on catchup for a month after the meeting (when speakers have given consent).

Limited places are available for each session, so bookings on Eventbrite are essential.

Hannibal Hawkins Macarthur and Anna Maria (nee King) emigrated to Australia from England on the ship Isabella arriving in Sydney on 18th August 1812. Anna bore 11 children - 5 sons and 6 daughters.

The Macarthur girls were all born at home in Parramatta in the developing colony of New South Wales. Their father, Hannibal Hawkins Macarthur, had been sent from England by his enterprising uncle, John Macarthur, to spearhead John’s trading interests and pastoral enterprises.

Hannibal saw opportunities in farming and bought the property The Vineyard in 1813 and lived there for the next 34 years

The house became a drawcard for visiting naval officers, explorers, artists, and the local gentry. It was the social hub in the district. The girls were often called upon to act as hostesses, meeting their future husbands either at the house or through friends and relatives.

From the early 1840s and 1850s, each of the girls had moved to the bush or to the new settlement at Brisbane. Kate, Anna and Emmeline were among the first generation of 'free settler' women whose stories are integral to the early pioneering history of Queensland.

The guided tour will be preceded by a Devonshire tea. Please advise any special dietary requirements when registering for the event. Cost $25

Talking about … Writing your family history--what are the options?
Starts: 28 Jun 2023 at 3:00 PM
Ends: 28 Jun 2023 at 5:00 PM

(GMT+10)

Queensland State Archives Visit

Queensland State Archives Visit
Starts: 10 Jul 2023 at 9:15 AM
Ends: 10 Jul 2023 at 2:30 PM
Notes: Let’s go together to the State Archives

We really don't think our members take full advantage of all the yummy info that places like the Queensland State Archives have in their collection - partly because they can seem a bit intimidating if you've never been there before and partly because it can be hard to understand what kind of records QSA holds and why. So we’re going as a group to learn together what’s there.

We’re hoping that an archivist from Queensland State Archives will join our Family History Toolkit session on 27 June to give us the introductory talk on ‘how to find your way around the records online’. That will enable us to explore online and order items for use when we are there together two weeks later. If you're coming to State Archives, be sure to register for Family History Toolkit on 27 June - it's a hybrid session so online via Zoom or in person at Chermside. Click here to register for Family History Toolkit 27June.

At QSA on Monday 10 July, we’ll meet there at 9.15am and start with a guided behind-the-scenes tour – sure to be fascinating. This will take about 50-60 minutes and then we will settle into the Reading Room and dive into the records.

The Reading Room closes for an hour at 12.30pm – we’ll have access to a break room during the day for a cuppa, BYO lunch.

The Reading Room afternoon session is 1.30pm-4.30pm , feel free to leave whenever suits you.

Presenting … The Roles and Visibility of Women in Brisbane’s Social Protests 1967-1982

Starts: 19 Jul 2023 at 1:00 PM
Ends: 19 Jul 2023 at 3:00 PM
Notes: THIS EVENT WILL BE HELD ONLINE AND IN PERSON AT THE QFHS FAMILY HISTORY RESEARCH CENTRE i.e. A HYBRID MEETING.

GUEST SPEAKER: JENNIFER O'DEMPSEY (QFHS MEMBER).

Jennifer O’Dempsey completed her PhD with Charles Sturt University in 2022.Her thesis is The Roles and Visibility of Women in Brisbane’s Social Protests 1967-1982. Her research interests include women in politics, protest and activism. Family history interests include Huguenots who migrated to Ireland, pre-separation Queensland, Bounty, German speaking, and Cornish immigrants.

Jennifer's thesis researched the involvement of women in social protests in Brisbane between 1967 and 1982. Secondary sources on the activities of Australian women protesters during this era were limited, difficult to locate, and focused on women’s activities in the southern states. Seventeen women were interviewed for the project. The themes emerging from these interviews formed the framework for the thesis and were supported as the women told their stories. These women played a central role in Queensland’s political activism. They introduced new forms of politics and self-expression by initiating and undertaking their own forms of protest that would confront inequality, and improve the status of women in the state of Queensland.

Presenting... times vary between 1pm and 7.30pm Please check the calendar carefully. You are welcome to attend as a visitor.

Our book club is designed for family historians. Share your favourite reads in a relaxed setting. There's no requirement to read a particular book. High brow, low brow - we don't care as long as we're enjoying good writing and discovering something along the way.

In this Book Club, our theme is Biographies.

The National Biography Award shortlist will be announced this month. Choose one of the past winners to read and share your thoughts with the group on why it won the Award?. Find a list of the 2021 Finalists at the State Library of NSW https://content-lists.sl.nsw.gov.au/tabular-list/national-biography-award-2021

Would you have shortlisted the book? How did the author develop the character in the early chapters? What elements contribute to a gripping or fascinating read?

Perhaps you have read a book from this year's shortlist? Who do you think are the hot contenders for this year and why?

The Book Club events are Members Only events. Non-members are encouraged to have a look at all of the activities of the society. In particular, check out the Members Lounge webpage where all members only events are listed. If you feel keen to attend these activities, please join us.

Metalsmithing encompasses some trades that are almost obsolete, and some that have joined the computer era. Were your distant ancestors blacksmiths? Were your colonial ancestors tinsmiths? Do you have fitters and turners in your family today?

Have you found a poem written about your smithy ancestor? Do you have words of wisdom to pass on about how to find apprenticeship or guild papers? Have you inherited a precious example of your relative's work?

Please note. A "Talking About" session is a discussion group where everyone is expected to contribute through sharing their knowledge and experience, through asking questions and/or giving opinions and answers. Talking about … The Baptists

Talking about … The Baptists
Starts: 23 Aug 2023 at 10:00 AM
Ends: 23 Aug 2023 at 12:00 PM
Notes: THIS EVENT WILL BE HELD ONLINE

Presenter: Eric Kopitke

Perhaps you have heard of famous Baptists like Dr Martin Luther King Jr or Billy Graham and wondered where they fit into the religious scene? Or perhaps you or your family went to a Baptist Sunday School or Girls' Brigade or Boy's Brigade? Or there is a wedding in your family that took place at a country Baptist church somewhere.

Would you like to come along for a chat to discuss this denomination and how you can research its records here in Brisbane? We welcome your questions about the church and its activities and documents, and would welcome any useful resources you may know about!

Eric Kopittke will be hosting this event in conjunction with Rev Dr David Parker. David is an ordained Baptist minister and has been involved in historical research for many years and is currently on a team of volunteers looking after the Baptist Church Archives, Qld, located at Gaythorne.

Please note. A ""Talking About"" session is a discussion group where everyone is given the opportunity to contribute by sharing their knowledge and experience, asking questions and/or giving opinions and answers. It is not a presentation. It is open to all levels of experience; no question is too silly to ask.

As these sessions have a limited number of tickets to ensure everyone gets their chance to participate in the discussion, if you are booked and realise you are now unable to attend, please advise us so we can reallocate your ticket to someone on the waitlist.

This event will be held at 10 am Queensland, Australia time (AEST, no daylight saving).

Socials - Coffee and Chat

Socials - Coffee and Chat
Starts: 28 Aug 2023 at 10:00 AM
Ends: 28 Aug 2023 at 12:00 PM
Notes: For our Members Lounge Social in August, let’s get together for a coffee and a chat about the women in our family histories.

August is National Family History Month and what better way to celebrate than to focus on the women in our family history: these stories are often elusive and difficult to uncover so let's share them over a coffee together.

Bring along a photograph or other artefact - a family heirloom (whether that be a piece of jewellery, a fabric or a piece of domestic kit), perhaps a ration book - that complements the story of a woman in your family's history.

Our ancestors live on when we share their stories.

Do join us!

Location: Cafe 63 Enoggera, 72 Pickering St Enoggera - behind Beaumont Tiles.

Parking: Scroll to the bottom of the Eventbrite booking page to see map.

We will arrange our seating in small tables & will ‘round robin’ our way around so we can easily hear each other’s shared stories.

Family History Toolkit

Family History Toolkit
Starts: 29 Aug 2023 at 10:00 AM
Ends: 29 Aug 2023 at 11:30 AM
Notes:

This Family History Toolkit session will look at Negative Evidence.

You may be familiar with the Genealogical Proof Standard (GPS) and the Evidence Map. If so, you will know that there are three types of evidence in our genealogical research: Direct Evidence, Indirect Evidence, and Negative Evidence. Perhaps the concept of Negative Evidence is the more complex concept to grasp.

Join Sue Reid as we investigate some of the concepts relating to Evidence and see how you might use them in your research.

Don’t worry if you are not familiar with the GPS or types of evidence. You are probably using the concepts in your research anyway.

This is not a formal presentation; it is more an interactive workshop. You are welcome to contribute to the workshop or simply observe. There will be pre-work to do if you wish to take part.

Members may attend this event either

• online via Zoom or

• in person at the Family History Research Centre

GUEST SPEAKER: Dr Jennifer Harrison (QFHS member)

Jennifer Harrison is a research fellow with the School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry at The University of Queensland following a career mainly based on history and biographical research. One of her main interests has been the worldwide input of the ‘Coming of the Strangers’ to nineteenth century Queensland. Tracing the origins of these pioneers - convicts, British soldiers, farmers, explorers and a complexity of others - raised many intriguing questions leading to much travelling over many years seeking answers. These research adventures have been a delight, as has investigating her own extended family connections which had its Australian genesis in 1792

This time Jennifer Harrison’s presentation will concentrate on how as part of New South Wales, this rapidly developing area kept in touch with the rest of the globe. Subjects considered will be newspapers, postal services, coastal shipping, the 1846 and 1851 census and electoral rolls. Come back to the pre-1859 years and reflect on the support systems to conquer lonely isolation available to the thousands of incomers, both from other colonies and overseas locations.

Starts: 23 Oct 2023 at 9:30 AM
Ends: 23 Oct 2023 at 12:00 PM
Notes: THIS EVENT IS HELD IN PERSON AT THE QUEENSLAND STATE LIBRARY.

OFFICIAL TOUR FINISHES AT NOON. MEMBERS MAY STAY ON FOR INDIVIDUAL RESEARCH.

SLQ holds an extensive collection of resources useful to family history research - but what? And where? Let's go together and find out!

We really don't think our members take full advantage of all the delicious info that places like the Queensland State Library have in their collection - partly because they can seem a bit intimidating if you've never been there before and partly because it can be hard to find the hidden gems.

So we’re gathering as a group to learn together what’s there.

Program:

* 9.30am gather together in the cafe from 9.30am

* 10am-12pm introductions to the collection & tours by SLQ librarians

* Lunch, either BYO or in the SLQ cafe .

* Self-directed research after lunch. Leave when suits you.

Getting there: https://www.slq.qld.gov.au/visit/getting-here

Parking is available but is expensive. A bus or train is a good option. Check the link provided above for more details.

Ends: 25 Oct 2023 at 12:00 PM
Notes: THIS EVENT WILL BE HELD ONLINE AND IN PERSON AT THE QFHS FAMILY HISTORY RESEARCH CENTRE i.e. A  HYBRID MEETING.

Facilitator: Chris Wright. Thanks to her fellowship we will consider the many ways a family history society can enrich our lives. Family history or genealogical societies have at their foundation a motivation to assist people in researching their family history.

Members of the Queensland Family History Society Inc know of the benefits of belonging to this Society with its focus on Queensland, Australian, and worldwide records. Our Society has a proud record of providing services to our members through our Family History Research Centre, events including the new Members Lounge, Special Interest Groups, online records, publications and social activities.

Perhaps you also belong to other family history societies, which focus on specialised areas, such as a particular state, county, country or specialist interest such as DNA or Quakers.

We invite you to join us and share your experiences with family history societies.

Please note. This event does not have a presenter, but a facilitator, and will be held online only.

Social connection and learning will be promoted by the facilitator providing discussion opportunities for the participants, through prompts, conversation and chat messages.

In some instances a TAlking About session may include a list of resources plus the 'chat' emailed to participants after the event. The event will not be recorded.

As these sessions have a limited number of tickets to ensure everyone gets their chance to participate in the discussion, if you are booked and realise you are now unable to attend, please advise us so we can reallocate your ticket to someone on the waitlist.

Learn@QFHS - Women of the Diggings
Starts: 10 Nov 2023 at 10:00 AM
Ends: 10 Nov 2023 at 11:30 AM
Notes: THIS EVENT WILL BE HELD ONLINE.

Topic: Who Rocked the Cradle? Women of the Diggings

Presenter: Dr Dorothy Wickham

The fight was for the right to vote; for equality; as well as for basic human rights. How women strove to exercise and exert their independent attitudes and ideas, and how they lived their lives, within such a restrictive male-controlled patriarchal society, has been essentially “hidden”.

Dot Wickham will examine how women challenged such gendered power structures. She will discuss women of the Victorian Gold Fields, from many different circumstances and places, who not only overcame obstacles but who were innovative and resourceful. In 1854 for example, Clara Seekamp took over the editorship of the Ballarat Times newspaper, when her husband Henry was arrested and thrown into gaol. Clara’s editorials were described by the Argus as outspoken, startling in tone, and liberal and energetic in their use of words such as ‘sedition’, ‘liberty’ and ‘oppression’. Fanny Finch of Castlemaine, a striking figure with her dark skin, black hair adorned in artificial flowers, and bright blue silk dress in 1856 saw a loophole in the ballot system and voted in local elections. In 1867 a group of 26 Ballarat matrons wrote to the government and established a female refuge for ‘fallen’ women (single mums), the first such institution on the Australian goldfields.

We may well ask ‘Who Rocked the Cradle?’

As these sessions have a limited number of tickets to ensure everyone gets their chance to participate in the discussion, if you are booked and realise you are now unable to attend, please advise us so we can reallocate your ticket to someone on the waitlist.

Produced by Growl Theatre, the play imagines what the witty and vibrant Bennet sisters' world might be like two years after the end of Pride and Prejudice as preparations are made for a family gathering for Christmas at Pemberley.

Georgiana Darcy is the only, and much beloved, sister of Mr Fitzwilliam Darcy. She is an accomplished pianist but wary of romance. Kitty Bennet is the second-youngest of the five Bennet sisters. She is a bright-eyed optimist and a perfect best friend.

These two younger women are ready for their own adventures in life and love, starting with the arrival of an admirer, and a secret correspondent. Meddlesome families and outmoded expectations won’t stop these determined friends from forging their own way.

The third and final play in the Christmas at Pemberley Trilogy, this is a holiday tale filled with music, ambition, sisterhood, and forgiveness.

Speaker: Ann Swain (a founding QFHS member). Ann is also a very early member of several Scottish and English family history societies and was once rung from England to see if she was in a nursing home because of her very low membership number! Ann taught senior biology for 38 years, after graduating from UQ majoring in Genetics and Botany. She was Secretary QFHS, 1981-84; President QFHS, 1986-89 and 2007-10; chaired the organising committee for the 7th Australasian Congress on Genealogy and Family History, Brisbane 1994; was Secretary of Australasian Federation of Family History Organisation 2004 - 09; is a Fellow of QFHS; and currently runs the QFHS New Members’ Welcome and Orientation sessions and is co-convenor of the QFHS DNA Special Interest Group and the Pre-Separation Group. She has published articles in QFHS, Aberdeen FHS, Central Scotland FHS, East Surrey and Lincolnshire FHS journals; for over a year during 2011-2012 was an expert guest on radio 4BC’s weekly Family History 101 segment; and is a regular and popular guest speaker and Q&A panellist.

The Biographical Database of Australia is a collection of references in biographical and other records to deceased Australians. It evolved from the Australian Biographical & Genealogical Record, the first volume of which was published in 1985. The BDA launched as an internet-based database in 2013 with approximately 500,000 records and now includes approximately 2,200,000 records. A key feature is the linking of multiple records for a person to form a referenced timeline (a Biographical Report) for the individual. This talk includes the background to the BDA; who the database covers; the sources of information; and the use and benefits of the database in family research, through examples.

After the guest speaker's presentation in November, those present in person can enjoy a Christmas celebration. Please bring a plate of festive food along to share.

Talking about ... Postal and Telecommunications.
Starts: 22 Nov 2023 at 10:00 AM
Ends: 22 Nov 2023 at 12:00 PM
Notes: THIS EVENT WILL BE HELD ONLINE

Presenter: Nancy Edwards

Knowing about postal and telecommunication history can help us complete the time line of our own family tree.

How many mail deliveries per day were there 100 years ago?

How long did mail take to get to the front in World War One and what birth, death or marriage notice was delayed, or even lost entirely?

Which Post Offices have changed their names and why, leading to us being unable to locate our ancestors on a map?

Were telegrams from friends and family unable to attend read out by the best man at your wedding?

Which country imports more than 75,000 metric tons off mail per year?

In September the National Archives of Australia presented a talk to the Queensland Family History Society titled You've got mail: Cobb & Co. Did this talk result in a success in tracing your ancestors? Did the talk raise even more questions? Bring your successes and questions along to this chat to see if anyone can help you, or if you can help someone.

Join Nancy Edwards in her last Talking about ... before Christmas. A representative from the Postal-Telecommunications Historical Society of Qld Inc will also be in attendance to contribute to the discussion.

Please note. A "Talking About" session is a discussion group where everyone is given the opportunity to contribute by sharing their knowledge and experience, through asking questions and/or giving opinions and answers. It is not a presentation. It is open to all levels of experience, no question is too silly to ask.

As these sessions have a limited number of tickets to ensure everyone gets their chance to participate in the discussion, if you are booked and realise you are now unable to attend, please advise us so we can reallocate your ticket to someone on the waitlist.

This event will be held at 10 am Queensland, Australia time (AEST, no daylight saving)

Guest speaker:  Des Diggles, Autor of "Wenlock".

Des grew up in the Windsor area and attended Windsor SS and Kedron HS.His profession was cartography, working for the Queensland Government in the Dept. of Mapping, Survey and Lands.

Des has authored technical cartographical publications, and gained a BA in 1989. Also during this time, Des spent 30 years in the Army Reserves with the engineers and transport, retiring as a Lieutenant-Colonel.

After retirement in 1999, Des researched, compiled and published, Mapping Queensland. This reference book covers the history of mapping in Queensland between 1859 and 1959 and is in our library at Chermside. In 2011, Des was awarded an OAM.

Des has written a fictional novel, “Wenlock”, set in North Queensland. Spanning three generations of three families, Wenlock is set in and about the town of Weipa North Queensland. The interaction between the Rochester, Palmer, and the Moses families is formed by tradition and occasioned by greed. The Palmer’s matriarch Harold Palmer unknowingly fathered an illegitimate son following a liaison while on leave in London during WWI. Returning to Australia he won the rights to the property he called ‘Marylebone Station’ in a ballot after WWI. This is the story of the struggles for ownership of that property

QFHS Volunteers Thank You; Presentation of QFHS Inc. Award for Services for Family History; Journal Article of the Year Award

QFHS Volunteers Thank You; Presentation of QFHS Inc. Award for Services for Family History; Journal Article of the Year Award
Starts: 4 Dec 2023 at 10:00 AM
Ends: 4 Dec 2023 at 12:00 PM
Notes: All of our wonderful volunteers are warmly invited to the QFHS Annual Volunteers Morning Tea on Monday, 21 November 2022. The Management Committee is grateful for all the work undertaken throughout the year by our wonderful volunteers.

We are also acutely aware that many volunteers make important contributions without ever setting foot on our premises. They do all their volunteering for the Society online. Therefore, this year’s Volunteers Morning Tea will be a hybrid event so our remote access members can participate in the proceedings. We hope, wherever you are, you can join us.

The in-person event will be held between 10.00 am-12.00 noon at Sky Lounge, Kedron-Wavell Services Club, 21 Kittyhawk Drive, Chermside (Parking available on site).

The online component will commence at 10.45 am with a live feed—an overview of who is in the room and who is with us from home, the various ways volunteers contribute to the Society, and the President’s address.

We will also recognise a member with the presentation of the Award for Services to Family History 2022. The recipient of the award will have made a significant contribution either to family history in general for the benefit of all family historians or to the Society in ways that benefit all members, whether it be to improve Society resources or to assist with the functioning of the Society and delivery of services to members.

We expect the formal online component will conclude at about 11.30 am. Our Zoomers are, of course, welcome to continue to chat as our in-person attendees will do. But, sadly, remote members will need to provide their own tea and cake at the Volunteers Morning Tea online.

All volunteers are invited to register for the event–whether attending in-person or online or giving your apologies. We will provide online attendees with the Zoom link the week before the event. We look forward to the pleasure of your company at the Volunteers Morning Tea.
