M P Hansen, of Malling |
A pioneer’s true story as told by M. P. Hansen and compiled by Oriel Harper. An absorbing account of the struggle by early settlers to the Malling District of the Darling Downs.
Peter Hansen and his brother Christy left Denmark on 10 November and arrived in Brisbane on Christmas Eve 1900. On arrival, they were advised by earlier Danish settlers to travel to Toowoomba as that was the best location for farmers to settle. Peter struggled with issues like prickly pear, drought, flooding rains, and Governments, but slowly bought more property to eventually build a very successful dairying region, including a cheese factory. Red Malling cheese is a direct result of Peter’s cheese making experiments in the 1920s. Includes an index of family names. (PDF)
