About Loyal Orange Institution of Queensland Registers

This index provides details for 16,831 members recorded in the third and fourth registers of the members of the Loyal Orange Institution of Queensland. The database lists key information recorded in the register – additional information can be found by clicking on the Source Image link in the database. The three earlier registers will be progressively indexed and added when finalised.

Permission has been given by the Grand Secretary of the Loyal Orange Institution of Queensland for members of the Queensland FHS to have access to the records of membership up to the year 2000.

Background

The Loyal Orange Institution is an international protestant fraternal society based primarily in Northern Ireland. The institution has existed in Australia since 1835 though it was not until 1865 that it commenced in Queensland with the Queensland Grand Lodge being constituted in 1867. Initially the institution was called The Loyal Protestant Association of Queensland however, on 30 January 1873, the name was changed to The Loyal Orange Institution of Queensland.

The membership registers are held at their headquarters at Darra in Brisbane but the minute books of the lodges are held at the State Library of Queensland.

What is in the index?

  • Surname – Surname of each member.
  • Given Names – Christian names of each member. Sometimes only initials are recorded.
  • Title – These have been placed into a separate field (Rev., Mrs., Miss, Sister, &c.)
  • Rank/Profession – This has been entered exactly as recorded in the lists. To find all members with a particular occupation it will be necessary to use a keyword search. This will allow location of, say, “painter” or “miner”. For Juvenile lodges this field is sometimes used to record an age when admitted to the lodge. In book three this field is often used for 'other' details such as Suspension for Non Payment of Dues.
  • Address – This field may include a suburb or town address. We have indexed this field exactly as recorded in the original register. Where only a street address is recorded in the register without the name of a suburb/town this field has been left blank.
  • Lodge No and Lodge Name
  • Member No – The registers have a column provided for recording a lodge membership number though this field is sometimes left blank.
  • Year of Initiation – The index includes the year of first initiation – other years may be available to view on the associated image.
  • Source Image – the image of the page in the register relevant to each entry
