General Ian Hamilton’s 1914 Queensland Visit.

Presenter: Chris Schuetz

In early 1914, General Ian Hamilton came to Queensland, ostensibly to review the cadets and military training, but it was part of something bigger: preparations for war.

Chris Schuetz tells us the backstory to General Hamilton's visit.

There was an earlier agreement between our minister for war/defence/foreign affairs and an English minister, behind the back of our own PM. All this was so we could rapidly supply soldiers as soon as war was declared, which was anticipated at any time.

More Newspapers: Overseas Newspapers and More Australian Newspapers

Presenter: Sue Reid

Newspapers are essential to family history research. We can find rich detail about people's personal, professional, and business lives from the content of newspapers—births, marriages, and deaths, community involvement, letters to the editor, and business advertisements. There is no limit to the variety of material. Australian researchers are well served for historic newspaper content with Trove Digitised Newspapers, but what about newspapers from overseas? What can we use? Also, what can we use to fill in some of the gaps in the titles on Trove?

In this presentation, Sue Reid will discuss free sources of overseas and Australian (apart from Trove) newspapers you can use to discover more about your family.
