Notes:THIS EVENT WILL BE HELD ONLINE ONLY. GUEST SPEAKER: Dr Jennifer Harrison (QFHS member) Jennifer Harrison is a research fellow with the School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry at The University of Queensland following a career mainly based on history and biographical research. One of her main interests has been the worldwide input of the ‘Coming of the Strangers’ to nineteenth century Queensland. Tracing the origins of these pioneers - convicts, British soldiers, farmers, explorers and a complexity of others - raised many intriguing questions leading to much travelling over many years seeking answers. These research adventures have been a delight, as has investigating her own extended family connections which had its Australian genesis in 1792 This time Jennifer Harrison’s presentation will concentrate on how as part of New South Wales, this rapidly developing area kept in touch with the rest of the globe. Subjects considered will be newspapers, postal services, coastal shipping, the 1846 and 1851 census and electoral rolls. Come back to the pre-1859 years and reflect on the support systems to conquer lonely isolation available to the thousands of incomers, both from other colonies and overseas locations. Note: This event is held in QLD time, AEST: no daylight saving. (GMT+10)
